Networking Camp
for Composers and Musicians
APPLY NOW FOR 27/7-1/8 2009, DEADLINE 3 JUNE
What?
A training camp for “classical” musicians and composers, freeform improvisers, electronica artists, and other creators of music who want to learn more about each other's professions, and become better at their own. Every day, each composer makes a new piece that is premiered on the eve of its conception. The music is created in close cooperation between musicians and composers.
Freedom
There are no artistic directors or teachers; instead, each participant is expected to be an independent artist, who develops his or her full potential, in interaction with the others. In order to provide as much room as possible for genuine artistic work, all practical and organizational details are meticulously prepared in advance by two project managers one musician and one composer who ensure that everything flows and that all participants find room to develop.
Structure
Each day begins with a theme of an extra- or intra-musical nature. Composers and musicians then work in close cooperation during the day, in new constellations every day. Every evening, there is an internal concert for and with the group, where the day’s work is first performed. After the concert all participants evaluate the day thoroughly, both in terms of working process and end result. In addition, during the week all participants lead a presentation of their music/instruments/equipment etc.
Dynamics
An ideal number is 20-30 participants, with a good mix of composers and musicians of different genres. In addition, one or two non-musicians, such as dancers, poets, painters etc., could participate in the camp.
Planned, led and assisted by Patrik Karlsson (musician) and Martin Q Larsson (composer/improviser), the camp will be located in a centrally located but isolated place with full facilities for food, lodging, rehearsals and small concerts for instance a conference facility in the countryside just outside a city.
Successful Pilot!
As a prototype, we implemented a Networking Camp in Bergslagen, Sweden, in July 2008, supported by Framtidens Kultur and Helge Ax:son Johnson Foundation. The final concert and evaluation is to be held in Västerås Concert Hall in January 2009, but the preliminary result of this pilot is that Networking Camp is more successful than we could ever imagine! One of the participating composers called it: ”Darmstadt for grownups”.
